According to TorProject's FAQ, a Tor relay will use less memory if compiled with openBSD-malloc and the latest openSSL. I've been playing with the latest release of I2P for a while now, and I must say that I really like it. I2P is an onion-routing network, decentralized, anonymous, fully encrypted, somewhat like Tor. While the focus of Tor is on anonymous surfing and publishing on the "regular Internet", I2P wants to be "a new network", with network-internal services and lower latency than Tor thanks to a packet-based approach. Tor's FAQ states that "I2P should really be seen as the dual of Tor. Basically every engineering decision Tor has made, I2P made the opposite."

Once you install and run (Java based) I2P you can configure and use it though a convenient local web interface, which already contains a webserver ready for anonymous content publishing, a webmail client, a Bittorrent client and a lot more. It works out of the box for most systems. Currently, they're working on integrating Tahoe-LAFS, a decentralized redundant data storage. The long-term idea is to be able to share some of your own drive space (of course fully encrypted), like you can already conveniently share bandwidth now.

Most fascinating for me is to be able to participate in the formation of a new network. Now that the basic protocols are stable, what it needs is people who set up services within the net, and hobbyists who want to help form a new network. To me, it feels a lot like Internet in the 90s. OR-Talk Mailing List, P. Varver: TOR Blocked at Universities (11.02.2010)

Ich hatte einen Tor-Exit-Node betrieben für einige Tage und bei meinem Provider (netcup.de) flatterte natürlich ein DMCA takedown notice herein. Wegen eines Torrents, von dem sie ( "CBS Corp" nicht netcup...) die Metadaten gefunden haben. Netcup hat danach meinen vServer runtergefahren - und mir ne Rechnung über 192€ plus Drohung, mich anzuklagen, würde ich nicht innerhalb von 24h CBS die gewünschte Antwort schicken plus der Bemerkung, für jede angefangenen 15 Minuten Arbeit, die sie hätten, würden sie mir weitere 20€ in Rechnung stellen. Seit einigen Wochen erhalte ich unentwegt automatisch generierte Emails von "DtecNet AntiPiracy" wegen angeblicher Urheberrechtsverletzungen. Die Emails gehen dabei an meine als Abuse-Kontakt gelistete Adresse für einen bestimmten, kleinen IP-Bereich. In den Emails wird je auf ein geschütztes Werk, den Rechteinhaber und verschiedene Warez-Foren mit direktem Link zum Beitrag hingewiesen, die von mir gehostet sein sollen.

Problem dabei ist, dass die URLs/Domains eindeutig nicht in meinen IP-Bereich fallen und ich dort auch nicht als Abuse Contact eingetragen bin. Also freundliche Antwort mit dem Hinweis darauf, inklusive Angaben des richtigen Abuse Contacts weil ich ja gar so nett bin, an die im Text angegebene Rückadresse (direkte Antworten gehen natürlich ins Nirvana). Nachdem weitere "Abmahnungen" folgen (Größenordnung 5 täglich) und meine Mail ignoriert wird, habe ich erneut und in Kopie an mehrere Adressen bei dtecnet.com auf die Fakten hingewiesen, und damit gedroht, zukünftige Mails des Bots direkt vom Mailserver ablehnen zu lassen, und in jedem Fall zu ignorieren. Vorerst jedoch habe ich sie in einen Unterordner sortieren lassen, und seitdem hat sich eine stattliche Sammlung angehäuft - ohne Unterbrechung, immer wieder die selben Warez-Foren.

Seit heute werden die Mails direkt abgewiesen. Pech.

Erneut ein Unternehmen, das sinnlos automatisiert abmahnt, ohne irgendwelche weiteren Schritte einzuleiten. Wenn es nur mein "Fall" wäre, aber nein, die Firma scheint auch sonst komplett inkompetent zu sein.
Fazit: Im nächsten Leben ein Abmahnunternehmen gründen, schönen Crawler und Bot schreiben, ausgesorgt haben.

I am a subscriber of the OR-Talk mailing list, the Onion Routing discussion list of everything Tor related. Today, one of the most active members of the list reported having trouble (again) with his ISP Comcast. It's probably best to read the post yourself. Basically they're saying that an open port equals running a "server", and running a server violates their AUP and requires a business account. Apparently, they're running port scans against their own customers.
