Today as institutions of all sorts crumble and collapse, and the written word becomes a living, dancing, hyperlinked thing that would have made Plato happy, the barbarian is set to return. He may be armed with a laptop and smartphone and fight his battles in the fluid and illegible world of virtual free-agency, while enjoying the idleness of a 4-hour working week, but he will have more in common with Genghis Khan than with his parents or grandparents.
