Craig asks: How will you change the World in 2012?
Craig from Craigslist is conducting a little experiment among readers of his new website Craigconnects: How Will You Change the World in 2012? I am submitting my trip across Europe.
Next year, I will take my van all around Europe for one year and interview regular people and people who “do good”. I have a Computer Science background, and I strongly believe technology plays an important role in improving society, but needs to be used in the right way.
I will focus on makerspaces, community organized places that allow people to learn and teach and build things on their own. I also want to look at other non-commercial groups that are typically underrepresented in the media (community gardens, larger scale shared living, offices, etc). I believe it is important to show the spectrum of paths you can take to go through life, and that a business career is not the only thing you can do to become happy and live a good life, and at the same time you can improve your community.
Along the trip, thanks to my programming background, I will collect ideas about how open software or hardware can help these people improve the world further. The current working title for the documentary is “Spaces”. All interviews will be released freely under Creative Commons. I am spending my savings on this, but I am also happy to hear from potential sponsors. The current project page is at hackerbus.eu and you can follow along on Twitter @hackerbus.
